My experience is contrived from 54 years on Canadian roads, 22 years on Mexico roads, two, 10,000km round trips and one 6000km one way trip down the pacific coast.
Mexican drivers have their head on a swivel, most of the vehicles are manual and they are controlling every move. North Americans expect the vehicle to do all the work, alert for every hazard and has eyes that see for them.
Situational awareness lost in the advancement of technology.
The chicken knows, If I don’t get out of the way I am done, if I am not paying attention to my surroundings, listening for the threat of vehicles, dogs or even hawks the risk of death, keeps them on the run.
The Mexican driver is very communicative as well, if a hazard is ahead on the road, they hit their hazards to alert oncoming or drivers behind.
Large trucks and busses, turn on the turning signal to those behind that its clear to pass their oversized load on difficult to see twist and turns.
They are also incredibly good on the horn when you mess up or attempt a full Alto|Stop
North Americans have become lazy, reliant on convenience and trust in the gadgets and devices that shut off their minds. Risk removed all in the name of safer, more effective.
Do you see Dead chickens on the road, Car crashes on the highway in Mexico?
Absolutely and the consequences are dire, usually no insurance to replace the car, No money for medical bills or payday for third party liability.
If there are no consequences, there is no lesson, no lesson, no change of behavior's.
No corrective action processes.
We can learn a lot from the Mexican Chicken!
